Our Story
We are The Hypnatwists, a dynamic three-piece band hailing from a garage in Salem, Oregon. Comprising Ruby on vocals and guitar, Tony on bass, and Zack on drums, we came together in a serendipitous encounter at a Hives concert in Portland back in November of 2023.
Our name, “The Hypnatwists,” is inspired by hypnagogic hallucinations but these are the ones that keep you up dancing at night. Just like those mesmerizing visions that keep you moving, our music aims to hypnotize listeners and keep them grooving till dawn.
Our Sound
United by a shared obsession with music, we knew something clicked the moment we jammed together for the first time. With backgrounds as varied as our record collections, we set out to craft a sound that’s our own. At our core, we’re a garage rock and DIY indie rock trio, chasing the kind of songs that feel as good to play as they do to hear. Our music hits with unfiltered energy, memorable hooks, and enough twists to keep you leaning in.
Ruby’s vocals soar with passion and intensity, delivering lyrics that resonate with honesty and emotion. Her guitar work is equally dynamic, ranging from gritty power chords to intricate melodies that captivate the listener’s ear.
Tony’s bass lines provide a solid foundation for our sound, driving the rhythm with infectious grooves and pulsating energy. His bass playing adds depth and dimension to our music, anchoring the songs with a powerful low end that demands attention.
Zack’s drums are the heartbeat: sharp, expressive, and full of punk-rock immediacy. His style pushes every song forward with intensity and flair, blending precision with spontaneity in all the right ways.
Together, we create a gritty, melodic, emotionally wired sound that refuses to sit still. From high-energy anthems to introspective ballads infused with the emotional depth of Bollywood music, The Hypnatwists defy genre conventions and embrace the freedom to explore new sonic territories.
